Eighteen Year old Charged for crime committed at juvenile centre

One male offender just turned eighteen at the Grand Bacolet Juvenile Centre in St. Andrew reappeared before the Grenville Magistrate’s Court last Wednesday, having been slapped with a number of criminal charges. 

He was granted bail in the sum of fifteen thousand dollars with two sureties for the offense of attempted murder. That was the offense which brought him to the Centre in the first place as he was a juvenile at the time of the alleged crime.

Prickly Bay Marina supports Attach-A-Leg – Grenada

Over twenty-two amputees have received below-the-knee prosthetic legs from the local organization – ‘Attach-A-Leg – Grenada’, since it was first founded 2014. The vision for the project was initially formed in 2012, following a visit by Ossur Kristinsson - founder of OKProsthetics in Iceland - a former colleague of Gylfi Hilmisson, who spearheads ‘Attach-A-Leg – Grenada’.  Hilmisson worked as a Prosthetics Engineer for twelve years in Iceland and the U.S.A. and along with his colleague, identified the need for affordable prosthetics in Grenada.

TAMCC GRADUATES 700

Despite the less-than-perfect weather on graduation day, more than 700 students have now joined the list of graduates of the T.A. Marryshow Community College (TAMCC). The 27th annual graduation ceremony was held at the Grenada National Stadium on Thursday last governed by the theme “Fostering Global Responsibility for a Sustainable Future”.

SCHOLAR Tops List at Calypso Semifinals

Findley Jeffery – “the Scholar”, according to the judges, topped the list of performances among the nineteen calypsonians who braced the stage at last Sunday’s Melody/Papitette Calypso Semi Finals held at the Victoria Park in St. Andrews.

 The veteran calypsonian, one of two in Grenada who can boast of having seven titles or more beneath his belt, amassed a total of 503 points with his two selections – “Clip my Wings” and “Take Jab.” Scholar’s performance was done with one of his legs in cast and this was not part of his props. He told the crowd that he actually damaged his leg days before the semi final, but refused to let it stand as a reason for missing out on Carnival 2016.

Record number of yachts expected for weekend’s series

Organizers of this year’s 22nd annual Tyrell Bay Yachting Regatta are expecting a record number of boats to compete in the Friday to Monday festival.

Founder and chief organizer of the event - Jerry Stewart, says that they have received confirmation from about 25 yachts, and most of them would be from North America. Once again he pointed out that this weekend’s exercise would be supported by Mount Gay Rum and Doyle Sails from Barbados, and Budget Marine from Grenada along with several local sponsors.

As a result of extraordinary performances by Grenadian sporting personalities on the international stage, the Grenada Government has committed to providing financial assistance to some of their sports people.

Grenada had representatives on the West Indies female cricket team, which defeated Australia in the final to win the World Cup; and similarly on the male U19 team to defeat England in the final to win the World Cup. Anderson Peters performed outstandingly to break the javelin record at the 2016 CARIFTA games in Grenada with a throw of 78.28m.

15 to challenge Soca Monarch Boyzie

Fifteen soca artistes have been named to challenge reigning soca monarch, Jalon “Boyzie” Olive on Bacchanal Friday night at the Grenada National Stadium. Heading that list are Shondell Amade alias“Dash”and Little Natty and Thunder.

 Both Dash and Little Natty and Thunder amassed 230 points coming out of last Friday’s Soca Monarch semi-final at theVictoria Park in St Andrew.

NDC alarmed over continuing youth unemployment

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) thinks the fact that another school year has ended and large numbers of new graduates are now looking for jobs makes the continuing high unemployment especially among the nation’s youth more alarming. Political Leader of the party, V. Nazim Burke said every year around this time thousands of students from secondary schools and tertiary institutions are added to the already high numbers of persons seeking jobs and there are no opportunities for them.

Jetblue launches new service to Grenada

International airline carrier JetBlue has announced a new service for passengers traveling to Grenada.

Starting January 2017, Grenada will become the fifth Mint Market in the region, with Mint flight sale commencing on July 20, 2016. Flights will operate seasonally on Saturdays between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and Grenada’s Maurice Bishop International Airport through April 2017.
