Grandson receives 13 years jail for KILLING HIS GRANDMOTHER

High court judge Shiraz Azziz has sentenced 18-year-old Joshua Mitchell of Birch Grove, St. Andrew’s to 13 years and 6 months for the brutal killing of his 84 -year-old grandmother Dorrel Mitchell of the same address in November 2014. Time already spent would be subtracted from the total sentence. The sentence was handed down last Tuesday. 

Evidence emanating from the trial had indicated that the son of the deceased discovered her body during one of his regular visits to her home at Birch Grove. A post mortem indicated she died as a result of asphyxia by strangulation.

Morne Jaloux Resident Demands Compensation

A Morne Jaloux resident is appealing to the government to respond to his letters and come clean regarding the status of his lands which seem to have been acquired.

Johnny Worme relates that in November last year (2016), persons attached to the De-bushing Program turned up to conduct work on his premises without anyone having informed him. When he asked them what going on, their response was just that they had been sent to work in the area.

Victoria Fish Market Upgraded

Two men in CRV arrested Good Friday

The driver and passenger of a white CRV SUV that crashed into a passenger bus on Good Friday in Pearls, St. Andrew have been arrested.

According to the police officer that visited the scene of the accident, the driver of the van attempted to mislead the police and was later arrested together with his passenger.

Grenada tops Batting, Bowling and Wicket Keeping in 2017 Winlott U15 tournament

Despite finishing second to St. Lucia for yet another year in the just concluded WinLott Windward Islands Under Fifteen Tournament, the young Grenadian ambassadors walked away with all individual prizes handed out during a short presentation ceremony, held at the Progress Park in St Andrews on Sunday.

Grenada’s success in the tournament was led by Captain Teddy Bishop who topped the batting, scoring the most runs, a total of 272 from six matches at an average of 54.40; a total that includes four half centuries with best being 59 not out.

Peter David In Position To Contest Town of St George

Senator, Peter David has been appointed the caretaker for the Town of St George – an area, which he served two terms as MP as a member of the National Democratic Congress.

The executive of the New National Party had previously announced that it would launch caretakers in five constituencies this month – the first in a series scheduled over the next few months.

MATHURINE-STEWART APPOINTED

Kindra Mathurine-Stewart has been appointed as the sister isles’ representative on the National Executive of the New National Party, thus painting a clearer picture of whom the party may be leaning towards as a replacement for the Member of Parliament Elvin Nimrod, when he decides to bow out of front line politics.

Reports are that she was given a standing ovation when she was called upon to attend a recent high-powered meeting of the party where the first five caretakers were unveiled to the nation.

Illegal Taxis At Spiceland Mall Is A Lie

Last week the Grenada Informer published an article in which a taxi operator at the Spiceland Mall complained about unauthorized persons operating there. 

One of the persons being referred to in the article subsequently visited our offices to dispute the previous version of the situation, saying the first report was misleading. Here is his version.

I have been going to the Spiceland Mall for seven years now with my taxi car, spending time chatting, making jokes and making new friends down there. I have seen all kinds of drama unfold there with taxi drivers who have said time and time again that they alone are authorized to operate taxi at the Spiceland Mall; no one else.

Making a Difference Initiative Launched with a Donation in Grenada

The health of children and seniors will be positively impacted by a barrel of children’s diapers and feeding bags with tubes attached, which were delivered to the Grenada General Hospital, by local Catholic priest, Fr. Leroy Hopkin, on behalf of New York-based donors, Christine Grant and Cheryl Vincent, who are both Grenadians.

The items, were accepted by the Director of Hospital Services, Esther Henry-Fleary, on the compound of the facility.

GCA/Republic Bank Rightstart Inter-Parish Tournament Launched

The Grenada Cricket Association (GCA)/Republic Bank RightStart Under 19 Inter-parish Cricket Tournament, kicked off with a press launch, attended by Ministry of Sports representatives and title sponsor, Republic Bank. 

For the 3rd consecutive year, Republic Bank has demonstrated its commitment, through tangible support, to ensure the tournament is played.   The matches are scheduled to commence April 18 and run until April 26th.
