Two Grenadians, One Vincentian on drug Charges

One Vincentian national and two Grenadians were arrested last Friday in the Richmond Hill area and subsequently charged after members of the Drug Squad intercepted their vehicle and seized sixty-five pounds of the illegal drug marijuana.

According to information reaching the Grenada Informer, the incident took place just about mid-day on Friday, when the men were seen off-loading the illicit substance from their vehicle into a house in Richmond Hill. Sources told the Informer that the lawmen quickly apprehended the men who were later charged with Possession and Trafficking a Controlled Drug.

The three; Woburn resident Garfield Blackman who less than one year ago was allegedly kidnapped in Venezuela where compensation was sought from his family to secure his release, Elliot Rocque a Vincentian national and Terrence Thomas all appeared briefly before Chief Magistrate Tamara Gill on Monday at the Number one Magistrate’s Court, where charges purporting to link them to the allegation of drug trafficking and possession were read to them.

Prosecution objected to bail for the men citing the seriousness of the offense, the likely penalty the men could face if found guilty and the issue of flight risk  and whether men would show up for their trial.

Defense Counsel Peter David was forceful in his attempts to secure bail for two of the three men, arguing that the allegations made against his clients were for bailable offenses. Additionally he said, his clients are presumed innocent until such time as the court proves them otherwise thus making them entitled to bail.

At the end of some heated legal exchanges, the magistrate had Blackman placed on $80,000.00 bail with two sureties, he was ordered to surrender all travel documents and report to the South St George Police Station daily, between the hours of 6am and 6pm.

Vincentian national Rocque was not considered for bail by virtue of his nationality, while Thomas had his request for bail turned down. All three men are expected to return to court on June 19th.
