Court Rules In Favor Of Customs In Smuggling Case

On Tuesday the 29th of September 2015 at the No.1 Magistrate Court, Daniel Roberts was found guilty of attempting to evade Customs duties on fourteen cases of du Maurier cigarettes.  Mr. Roberts, who was defended by the Law Office of G.E.D Clyne, was fined $10,000.00 and the cigarettes were forfeited to the state.  In default of payment, Mr. Roberts can face up to a year in prison.

The smuggling attempt occurred in January of 2012, when officers of the Mobile Anti-Smuggling Team of the Customs Department searched the motor vessel Study Us II, which arrived from Carriacou and found the fourteen cases of cigarettes.  Further investigations into the incident revealed that Mr. Roberts was the person responsible for the offence, which led to him being charged.

The Customs and Excise Department considers smuggling in any form a serious offence and would like to take this opportunity to warn perpetrators that if caught, the full extent of the law will be executed.

Any person with information on such activities are urged to contact the Enforcement Unit of Customs on telephone numbers 1-473-440-6049, 440-2239/2240, the strictest confidentiality will be maintained.
