Manager Baptiste: “Grenada stands a good chance of defending its title.”

Manager of the Grenada National Senior Cricket team Sergeant Rondell Baptiste is confident that the 2015 national team stands an excellent chance of successfully defending the Windward Island title won in 2014.

Speaking to the Grenada Informer via telephone on Tuesday, one day before the team left Grenada for St Vincent and the Grenadines, Baptiste said, given the level of preparation that went into getting the team ready for the tournament, he firmly believes that they can be successful.

Preparation he said started in July under the supervision of   Head Coach Ricky Williams with assistance from Clyde Telesford, Junior Murray and Steve Mahon, all former national players. This he said included extensive net sessions, physical training and practice matches and from all indication the players are looking ready.

Speaking to the strengths of his team, the manager said Grenada’s bowling has always been its strength over the years along with the batting of Captain Devon Smith, however he hopes that this time around, other players would step up to the plate and deliver both with bat and ball. In the batting department the manager said apart from the captain his eyes would be on Herron Campbell, Andre Fletcher, Nickozi St Hillaire, and Roland Cato and with the ball Denis George, Nelon Pascal and Josh Thomas.

The full team comprises:

1. Devon Smith (Captain)

2. Andre Fletcher (Vice-Captain)

3. Herron Campbell

4. Nickozi St. Hillaire

5. Roland Cato

6. Emmanuel Stewart

7. Denis Smith (Wicket-keeper)

8. Denis George

9. Deron Hypolite

10. Ryan John

11. Nelon Pascal

12. Josh Thomas

13. Craig Phillip

The national team will be supported  by Coach Rickey Williams and manager Rondell Baptiste.

Matches are of two days duration, the Spice Boys took on host St Vincent and the Grenadines in their opening game at the Anos Vale playing field. That game was scheduled for August 20th and was expected to be completed later today. The game Dominica versus St Lucia at the Sion Hill playing field is also expected to be completed later today.

The second round of matches is expected to commence tomorrow Saturday August 22nd. In one game defending champion Grenada will play Dominica at the Anos Vale playing field while host SVG will take on St. Lucia at Park Hill playing field. The final round of matches August 25th and 26th will feature host SVG versus Dominica at Anos Vale and Grenada versus St Lucia at Park Hill.

The team is expected back in Grenada on August 27th.
